An interesting thing about older buildings in California, some have bracers that in theory help hold up the building in the event of a quake. You can see these as small squares with bolts in rows all along the outside of buildings. What you see here would be what they look like on the inside. Usually, they are covered over or in ceilings. We have two of these implanted into our hardwood floors in our living room.
